Chapter Thirteen of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, titled “Nicholas Flamel” details the trio’s breakthrough in their research, an intense Quidditch match, and further suspicions about Snape.

The Trio’s Research Breakthrough

After days of searching, the trio has almost given up on their research on Nicholas Flamel, as the library is of no help. Even though he cannot find Flamel in the books, Harry has a feeling that he has read the name previously.

Nevile finds himself getting bullied by Draco Malfoy, and to cheer him up Harry gives him his last remaining chocolate frog. Nevile finds the Albus Dumbledore card, and in it, Harry finds mention of Nicholas Flamel.

This discovery reminds Hermione of something, and she rushes off to fetch a book. The trio finally discovers information about Nicolas Flamel.

Flamel is revealed to be the only known maker of the Philosopher’s Stone, a legendary substance that grants immortality and turns any metal into pure gold. This discovery explains the significance of the package being guarded by Fluffy, the three-headed dog

Quidditch Match

Harry finds out that their next match, Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff, is being refereed by Snape. However, the presence of Dumbledore in the stands eases his mind, and he gets ready to play.

Despite the tension, Harry plays brilliantly. He catches the Golden Snitch in record time, securing a victory for Gryffindor.

During the match, a fight breaks out in the stands between Ron and Draco Malfoy, escalating tensions and causing a scene

The Hooded Figure and a Conversation

After the match, while the celebrations are still ongoing, Harry sees a hooded figure sneaking into the Forbidden Forest. With his curiosity piqued Harry decides to follow the figure to investigate further.

Harry follows the hooded figure into the forest and discovers that it is Snape. He overhears Snape having a tense conversation with Professor Quirrell about the Philosopher’s Stone. Snape pressures Quirrell to help him get past Fluffy. This interaction increases his suspicion that Snape is trying to steal the stone.

Gryffindor Celebrations

The Gryffindor House celebrates their Quidditch victory with great enthusiasm. The victory boosts the morale of the house, though Harry remains troubled by what he overheard. He shares the news with the trio, which troubles them too.

The chapter ends with the trio experiencing a mixture of feelings. They are convinced Snape is up to something evil, and therefore cannot fully enjoy their victory.
