Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Chapter 2 Summary

The Scar

Chapter 2 of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, titled “The Scar” deals with Harry’s nightmare and a letter to Sirius.

The Nightmare

Harry wakes up from a nightmare, breathing as though he has been running. The scar on his forehead had been burning, which was unusual. He gets up and tries to recall the dream he had just been having.

HE cannot remember it at first, but it slowly starts to come back. It involved an old man who had been murdered by Voldemort and Wormtail. They had been plotting to kill someone else too; Harry himself.

Harry isn’t bothered about the pain. The thing that bothers him is that his scar never hurts; not until Voldemort is close by. He wonders what Hermione and Ron would have said about it.

Perhaps Hermione would have told him to go straight to Dumbledore and consult a book about scars. He doubts that any book would hold answers to his questions, and he surely cannot bother Dumbledore with something like scar pain.

Ron on the other hand, would have no idea what to do and would have probably consulted his dad. While Mr Weasley was a qualified wizard, he wouldn’t know a lot about Harry’s scar either.

After a few minutes of thinking, Harry realizes he can talk to Sirius about it.

A Letter to Sirius

Ever since the Dursleys had heard that Harry had a convicted murderer on the run for a godfather, their behavior towards him had changed. He had received two letters from Sirius so far, and both of them had been delivered by brightly colored tropical birds. While Sirius never disclosed his hiding place, Harry assumed that Sirius had gone to a place with palm trees and loose sand.

In both of his letters, Sirius had reminded Harry to call him if required. Taking him up on the offer, Harry starts writing a letter addressed to him.

He thanks Sirius for his letters and tells him about the Dursley household. Dudely has been put on a diet, which is not going well. Aunt Petunia caught him sneaking donuts to his room last night and threatened to cut his pocket money for it. This angered Dudely, and he chucked his PlayStation out the window.

He also tells him about the nightmare that made his scar hurt and asks him for advice.

The chapter ends as Harry folds up the parchment in anticipation for Hedwig’s return, and dresses to go down for breakfast.
